Nicknamed Alcor, the developer of the famed Quicksilver application has opened up the source code for Quicksilver. Alcor had promised to open-source Quicksilver in time for the Leopard OS, and has kept his word. It is licensed using the Apache License. Quicksilver is very famous for being quick, light and improving our productivity. It is the most popular launcher at present, and things look better with the open-sourcing.
This event is not a feature update, and is expected to be more of a massive bug hunt and fix thanks to the open-source community that will be taking it for a spin. Also, the Alcor’s life will be easier, not to mention devote more time towards adding features rather than hunting down bugs.
Speculations are rife about possible porting to Windoze. What I do know, is that Mac application developers and ports are a failure for Windoze. I remember my time with Windoze, when the iTunes just bogged down the whole system. Quicktime is not much different. Also, Quicksilver is written mostly using Cocoa(Apple’s OOP). This makes it harder for a possible port. I would recommend Windows user not to really dream about an efficient Quicksilver any time soon.
It looks like Windozers users will still have to choose from one of the other several application launchers available, with the most popular probably being Launchy and Colibri.
